Tongue-Tie Surgery

Simply put: tongue-tie restricts the tongue's range of motion. This condition, which is present since birth, can interfere with breast-feeding, and ultimately affect the way your child speaks, swallows, and eats. The main indicators of problematic tonge-ties include difficulty lifting the tongue to the upper teeth, past the lower teeth, and side-to-side.

We may initially recommend oral surgery if your child's tongue-tie is causing significant issues with breast-feeding. For older children, we may suggest surgery after a referral from a speech-language pathologist or after complaints from your child related to eating, speaking, and other tongue-tie symptoms.

What Is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is simple and straightforward. During this relatively-minor procedure, we will use a scalpel, scissors, or dental laser to snip the lingual frenulum and free up the bottom of the tongue. We use the latest technology and advanced techniques to ensure the tissue is cut in a precise and effective manner.

If your child has recently been diagnosed with a tongue-tie, oral surgery may be the answer. We should be able to determine whether or not surgical intervention is necessary during an initial consultation. Give us a call today.

Food Can Help a Loose Tooth Come Out

If your child has a loose tooth, it can be frustrating. The child wants the tooth to come out, but it is just too tender to wiggle and they are too impatient to wait. If this is something you have faced, then you should consider a few different foods that can help. Apple slices are a great food to get the tooth to wiggle with, and sometimes the tooth even gets stuck in the apple. You can also have help if your child eats something sticky or chews gum. You can also try something like frozen yogurt, since this will help numb the child’s mouth, making removal even easier. Want more tips? Then give our office a call.

Why Chewing Xylitol Gum is a Good Idea

Chewing gum is a great way to keep your teeth clean, but if you chew gum that contains sugar, it can leave your mouth open to cavities. Instead, we recommend that you chew gum with xylitol. This is a sugar substitute that research has shown to reduce and even prevent cavities. If you chew gum regularly, it helps pull debris out of the far reaches of your mouth. The xylitol reduces the chances of developing cavities in the places where debris came up. This means easier visits to our office every six months, and a healthier smile in between.
